This dataset includes the document Heritage and sustainable development strategy, the 2021 action plan for Old Dongola and the Nafir commitment, written in English by Dr. Peter Bille Larsen, the consultant for the Dialogue community engagement project, and the Arabic translation of the document (the translation by Ola Mamoun), and the document "Nafir" which is the expression of the commitment to work together by the stakeholders of Old Dongola.
The document was created as a result of the field data collection by interviewing the people who live in the vicinity of Old Dongola, Sudan, with Prof. Baloula Mohamed Baloula Abbas in 2019, 2020 and 2021, and consultations with the national and local stakeholders of Old Dongola at a stakeholder meeting.The meeting with the 33 international, national and local stakeholders to discuss the strategic plan for heritage and sustainable development at Old Dongola, was held by the archaeological team of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw (PCMA, UW) on 12th and 13th February 2021 at the Polish team's house in Old Dongola. Dr. Peter Bilie Larsen and Prof. Baloula Mohamed Baloula Abbas led the discussion of the meeting.
The hard copies of the document in Arabic and English were distribute to the participants of the meeting in January 2022.
The stakeholders who participated in the meeting signed up to the Nafir and expressed their commitments to work together for protection, raising awareness, improved management and World Heritage nomination of Old Dongola.
Old Dongola is located on the right bank of the river Nile, c. 350km north of Khartoum, the capital of the Republic of Sudan.
The Dialogue community engagement project was carried out within the framework of a multidisciplinary project, ArchaeoCDN. Archaeological Centre of Scientific Excellence, led by Dr. hab. Artur Obłuski (PCMA, UW), funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland. Dr. Tomomi Fushiya led the community engagement project.
The fieldwork in 2020 and the stakeholder meeting in 2021 at Old Dongola was conducted as a part of the PCMA, UW Old Dongola archaeological project, headed by Dr. hab. Artur Obłuski (the director of PCMA, UW). The PCMA, UW Old Dongola project has obtained research permission to work in Old Dongola from the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums, Sudan.
