This study investigates the surface engineering of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrodes modified with atomically precise Au₂₅(SC₄)₁₈ gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) cationic surfactant via the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction (CO₂RR). By adjusting the component ratio and transfer surface pressure, the co-assembly optimizes nanocluster dispersion and creates a hydrophobic microenvironment around the active sites. A 5 mol% DDAB fraction (AuNCs/DDAB 95/5%) provides the ideal balance: it suppresses nanocluster aggregation, enriches local CO₂ concentration, and minimizes water accessibility, thereby suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Consequently, this optimized film achieves lower charge-transfer resistance, enhanced electrocatalytic activity, and high product selectivity compared to pure AuNC modifications.
