Dataset description
This dataset contains measurements of nectar traits and floral characteristics of the common viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare L.) collected from urban populations in Warsaw, Poland.
The dataset was created to investigate how urban environmental conditions influence nectar production and sugar concentration in flowers.
The study examines relationships between nectar properties and:
- landscape composition surrounding plant populations (impervious, green and water areas within buffers of 150 m, 600 m, 1000 m)
- local thermal conditions,
- flower position within inflorescences,
- floral morphology.
Study design
The study was conducted in 16 populations of Echium vulgare located across Warsaw, Poland. Field sampling was conducted between May 30th and June 8th in 2023, and between May 17th and June 4th in 2024. If a population was not accessible in a second year, it was replaced by a nearby population located no more than 400 m from the original site. In such cases, the replacement population was assigned a new unique ID to distinguish it from the original population in statistical analyzes.
At each study site:
- 5 inflorescences were selected
- 5 flowers per inflorescence were sampled
Total sample size: 800 flowers (2 years x 16 populations x 5 inflorescences x 5 flowers)
Nectar traits
Nectar was collected in the morning (approximately 07:30) using glass microcapillary tubes.
Measured variables:
- nectar volume (µL)
- sugar concentration (measured originally as percentage (%) and rescaled to proportions (0-1) for statistical analyzes
Floral morphology
For each flower, the following traits were measured:
- corolla length (mm)
- corolla diameter (mm)
- relative flower position within inflorescence (expressed as: sequential flower position / total number of cymes on the inflorescence)
Landscape composition
Landscape variables represent proportions of:
- green areas
- impervious areas
- water water
and were calculated within buffers of: 150 m, 600 m, 1000 m around each study population.
Temperature variables
- Air temperature for each study site: Air temperature at 07:00 extracted from ERA5-Land reanalyzis.
- Nighttime land surface temperature for each study site: Extracted from MODIS MOD11A1 for the night preceding sampling.
