The purpose of the query and preliminary archival survey was to identify the structure and holdings of German aerial photographs from the Second World War preserved in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in College Park, Maryland, USA, for research on the civilian population of Warsaw’s Wola district during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, and subsequently to select and acquire relevant photographs.
As a result of this work, archival units with the greatest research value in relation to the objectives of the project were identified and selected. The materials document Warsaw, including the Wola district, showing the urban landscape before the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and during the course of the fighting. They also provide insight into the structure of the German aerial-photograph collections preserved at NARA and facilitate the reconstruction of the probable original organization of these resources within the German armed forces and archival system.
Digital copies (scans) of aerial photographs and documents were obtained from five archival units within the Records of the Defense Intelligence Agency (Record Group 373 – RG 373). These archival units are: DT-TM 5 16735–16825 (complete set of photographs), DT-TM 3 Poland (selected photographs), GX 8193 SD (selected photographs), GX 8193 SK (complete set of photographs), and GX 12393 SK (selected photographs).
A total of 177 unique German aerial photographs and photogrammetric materials from the Second World War were acquired as digital copies in the form of double-sided scans (recto and verso). Of these, 72 photographs depict Warsaw before, during, and after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The remaining 105 photographs document the structure of the archival collection in its present form and, at the same time, provide valuable material for reconstructing and analysing its original organisation prior to its acquisition and processing by the Western Allies at the end of the Second World War.
The acquired dataset will be used for further research on the civilian population of Warsaw’s Wola district during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The materials may also be used for research on a wide range of topics within the humanities, social sciences, and natural and technical sciences.
The international archival research during which these research data were acquired was carried out under Activity IV.4.1, “Comprehensive Support Programme for Doctoral Students at the University of Warsaw”, within the call “Microgrants for Doctoral Students of the University of Warsaw in 2026”, funded by the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Programme of the University of Warsaw.
During the international archival research on German aerial photographs from the Second World War, conducted at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in College Park, Maryland, USA, in May 2026, a total of 390 digital files were created. These consisted of double-sided (recto and verso) scans of 177 photographs/photogrammetric items, resulting in 354 files, as well as 36 additional scans of verso sides.
The acquired digital copies (scans) of archival photographs are available in two versions:
- Master files (identified by the tag “Masters”): images stored in the lossless TIFF format at a resolution of 1200 dpi. During the archival work, several exceptions to this standard were made in order to optimize workflow efficiency. These exceptions did not concern photographs considered crucial to the objectives of the research. In such cases, the master files were saved in JPEG format.
- Access copies (identified by the tag “Access”): images stored in JPEG format, created by reducing the dimensions of the master files to 50% of their original size (indicated in the filename by “resized_50_pct”). The largest files were reduced to 25% of their original size (indicated by “resized_25_pct”).
Thus, taking into account 390 master files (Masters) together with 390 access files (Access), the entire collection comprises a total of 780 files.
The acquired data were organized through a filename convention reflecting the archival provenance, including the reference code, of each file.
The naming convention for digital copies (scans) is presented below.
Filename structure:
RG373 + GX_00001_SK + 001 + r/v + 01 + Epson/Viisan + 200/300/600/1200_dpi + (…)
Description of filename elements used in this dataset:
- RG373 – archival record group;
- GX_00001_SK – archival unit;
- 001 – sequential photograph (exposure) number;
- r/v – recto/verso of the photograph;
- 01 – sequential scan number;
- Epson/Viisan – scanner used;
- 200/300/600/1200_dpi – scan resolution;
- (…) – optional additional descriptive information.
This naming convention is based on the system used by the National Archives (NARA), with necessary modifications.
Filename structure used by NARA:
RG373 + 175799999 + GX_12220B_SK + 001 + (01)
Description of filename elements used by NARA:
- RG373 – archival record group;
- 175799509 – NAID (National Archives Identifier) of the archival unit;
- GX_12220B_SK – archival unit designation;
- 001 – sequential photograph (frame) number;
- (01) – optional sequential number of a frame within the same image, where applicable.
The NAID element was omitted from the naming convention adopted for the present dataset because such identifiers are not assigned to materials that have not undergone institutional digitization by the archive.
In addition, the NARA system was expanded with several elements important for the future use of the acquired data:
1. Recto/verso designation, following the practice of the National Library of Poland in Warsaw, including materials made available through the Polona digital library:
- r (recto) – front side;
- v (verso) – reverse side.
2. Sequential scan number of a given image, introduced because some photographs required more than one scan, for example when scanning objects slightly larger than A3 format.
3. Scanner identification, reflecting differences in the technical specifications of the devices used:
- Epson – Epson Expression 13000XL scanner, A3 format, 2400 dpi optical resolution, CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) technology;
- Viisan – Viisan VF3240 scanner, A3 format, 2400 dpi optical resolution, CIS (Contact Image Sensor) technology.
4. Scan resolution designation:
- 1200 dpi – for recto scans of photographic prints considered particularly significant to the research objectives;
- 200/300/600 dpi – for recto scans of the remaining photographic prints;
- 200/300 dpi – for verso scans of photographic prints.
5. Additional scan information, where relevant, including details concerning the scanned area of an image or technical issues encountered during the scanning process.
Pozyskano kopie cyfrowe (skany) zdjęć lotniczych i dokumentów z 5 jednostek archiwalnych z zespołu Records of the Defense Intelligence Agency (Record Group 373 - RG 373). Są to następujące jednostki archiwalne: DT-TM 5 16735-16825 (komplet zdjęć), DT-TM 3 Poland (wybrane zdjęcia), GX 8193 SD (wybrane zdjęcia), GX 8193 SK (komplet zdjęć) i GX 12393 SK (wybrane zdjęcia).
Łącznie pozyskano kopie cyfrowe (w formie obustronnych skanów – recto i verso) 177 unikatowych niemieckich zdjęć lotniczych i materiałów fotogrametrycznych z okresu II wojny światowej.
Zbiór pozyskanych danych posłuży do przeprowadzenia dalszych badań nad ludnością cywilną Warszawy – dzielnicy Wola w okresie powstania warszawskiego 1944 r.
· Pliki źródłowe (opisane tagiem „Masters” - master files): obrazy zapisane w bezstratnym formacie TIFF o rozdzielczości 1200 dpi.
Wzór nazwy pliku: RG373 + GX_00001_SK + 001 + r/v + 01 + Epson/Viisan + 200/300/600/1200_dpi + (…)
Opis poszczególnych elementów zawartych w nazwie pliku stosowanym w niniejszym zbiorze:
1. „RG373” – zespół archiwalny,
2. „GX_00001_SK” – jednostka archiwalna,
3. „001” – numer kolejny zdjęcia (klatki),
4. „r/v” – awers/rewers zdjęcia,
5. „01” – numer kolejny skanu,
6. „Epson/Viisan” – skaner,
7. „200/300/600/1200_dpi” – rozdzielczość skanu,
8. „(…)” – opcjonalny dodatkowy element opisowy skanu.

- RG373 – grupo documental;
- GX_00001_SK – unidad archivística;
- 001 – número secuencial de la fotografía (fotograma);
- r/v – recto/verso de la fotografía;
- 01 – número secuencial del escaneo;
- Epson/Viisan – escáner utilizado;
- 200/300/600/1200_dpi – resolución del escaneo;
- RG373 – grupo documental;
- 175799509 – identificador NAID (National Archives Identifier) de la unidad archivística;
- GX_12220B_SK – denominación de la unidad archivística;
- 001 – número secuencial de la fotografía (fotograma);
- r (recto) – anverso;
- v (verso) – reverso.
- Epson – escáner Epson Expression 13000XL, formato A3, resolución óptica de 2400 dpi, tecnología CCD (Charge-Coupled Device);
- Viisan – escáner Viisan VF3240, formato A3, resolución óptica de 2400 dpi, tecnología CIS (Contact Image Sensor).
4. Indicación de la resolución del escaneo:
- 1200 dpi – para los escaneos del recto de copias fotográficas consideradas especialmente relevantes para la investigación;
- 200/300/600 dpi – para los escaneos del recto de las demás fotografías;
